About Me
Hi…my name is Devin Nelson and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist operating in the state of California. I am a life long resident of Northern California. I grew up and resided in San Jose, CA for the first 40yrs of my life. My roots there enabled me to discover and develop more of myself as that entailed a deep passion for reaching out to people and nurturing and developing their full potential of who they are and who they desire to be. My journey took me on a path of my first career calling being a youth pastor for almost 10yrs. There I found a giftedness of connecting, listening to and helping adolescents, young adults and their families through the struggles, confusion and pain of traversing through a unique part of life and discovering themselves. This journey led me to continual self development of my own, as we all are in continual process of learning and growing within ourselves. My path led me in and through a valley season of my own struggles of encountering issues with depression, self-esteem, physical health, unemployment, financial strain. The journey led to working in the corporate world for a few years, in which there I found a renewal of my giftedness and heart for helping people. This spark led me to pursuing my graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Western Seminary. Unbeknownst to me, graduate school is were I was challenged to grow more than ever before. The process of learning to help others requires a deeper process of learning to discover and grow yourself. My education and training led me to working, for almost 3yrs, as a Caseworker for a boys residential group home where young men who struggle with drug addiction and mental health come to find respite, care and support. In continuing to further develop skills in the field, I entered into private practice, both in San Jose and in Folsom, where I have focused on working with individuals, couples and families who have encountered their own seasons of trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship conflict, unhealthy coping skills, loss and pain.
Therapy is not a “one size fits all” approach, that is why my approach to therapy is one that is eclectic and relationally based. The client is the ‘expert’ in knowing themselves the best, that is why I truly believe and have witnessed, that the client has the ability to discover and develop into the change that they long for. My purpose is to step into the journey with them, using the knowledge and skills that I have acquired, in hopes of bringing about the best version of themself that they are motivated and willing to journey into.
My trainings and experience are in attachment, addiction and trauma, with utilization on modalities of EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Emotionally Focus Therapy (EFT), Prepare and Enrich, Gestalt, Psychodynamic, Mindfulness.
In my free time I like to spend time with my wife and our 4 beautiful children by getting outside whether up in the mountains, out on the lake, taking a drive or spending time with family and friends.
If any of this resonates within you and you are wanting and ready to take a journey of Reflection, Renewal and Restoration to achieve the change you long for, then please feel free to reach out.
